DOE message system to aid communication

NA HOKU NEWS

The State Department of Education has instituted a new messaging system for parents and employees that it expects will improve communication. The system, called School Messenger, can generate messages from the state office as well as from the individual school. In the past, each school had to have its own way to communicate in a timely way with parents and the community.

“We expect the system to send a clear, consistent message to our families,” Moanalua High School Principal Robin Martin said.

Parents will receive messages via phone calls, emails, and text messages.

Moanalua’s old system sent parents school-specific information such as attendance or the date of Open House. Any state-level announcements came separately from the state DOE. It would then be up to the school to convey the message to parents. Now, all messages will come from the same account.

The new system is not compatible with the school’s old system, so parents wishing to receive texts from the state and school must opt in. To subscribe, parents can text “Yes” to 67587. Text “stop” to the same number to stop receiving messages.

Parents have been pleased with the communication.

Tracie Romualdo, who has children at Moanalua High School, as well as Moanalua Middle School and Momilani Elementary School, is happy with the new system.

“I feel the School Messenger platform is an easy and quick way to keep informed of events and messages at the school, district, and DOE levels. Just opt in to get texts, voice recordings, and emails! So simple!” she said.

The Moanalua High School website will still be administered at the school level.
