City to eliminate Ala Napunani Street crosswalk
It’s time to for the Ala Napunani Street crosswalk right outside the school fence to officially hit the road. Some time this week, the city will cover over the white stripes and place permanent “no crossing” signs on the sidewalks. It’s a long-hoped-for project, according to the school.
“The city finally agreed to take it away,” Aliamanu/Salt Lake/Foster Village Neighborhood Board Chair Chace Shigemasa said.
Shigemasa explained to the Moanalua School Community Council at its May 9 meeting that after initially rejecting the community’s recommendation to remove the crosswalk to improve traffic flow on Ala Napunani Street, the city decided to follow the Board’s recommendation from last fall.
The next step for the city is to find the funds necessary to raise the curb in the middle of the street so it will look like a median and not like an area for walking.
School to try shuttle service to ease graduation traffic
To lessen the traffic and allow more spectators at Moanalua High School’s graduation May 24, the school said it was going to have shuttles to move people from remote parking lots to the campus.
Roberts Hawaii will be carrying passengers from Aliamanu Elementary School to an area near the Ala Napunani Street roundabout in an effort to transport people without adding to the traffic congestion that clogs the surrounding roads.
“We just want to try this out,” Principal Robin Martin said.
She said the construction of the auditorium is only removing about 30 parking stalls in the student lot, but she acknowledged that trying to find parking in the area as a whole is frustrating. Having a shuttle will reduce the number of cars in the area and allow more people to attend the graduation, providing they don’t mind walking a bit.
The exact drop-off location and cost are still to be determined.
