Moanalua’s own media Film and Broadcasting teams flew out to Seattle, WA on March 22nd to compete in the Student Television Network (STN) convention. The two teams submitted multiple works in different types of media categories to be judged by a panel of professionals in the field. The judges viewed and scored the videos students across the country made and determined the winners of each category in the competition.

The teams competed in STN competitions both online and at the convention itself. The online films the students prepared and submitted prior to arriving in Seattle. At the convention, the students were given a prompt (sometimes a required prop) and a six to eight hour window to produce a video. Students were not allowed to start working on their video until all schools received their instructions, and the schools did not receive their instructions until the timer starts. This forced the students to create their videos on the spot in Seattle. There are multiple categories in which our students from both teams submitted entries in.

Menemac’s Broadcast team was awarded as a regional winner for Broadcast Excellence. They were also given honorable mentions in categories such as Tell the Story, Multimedia Journalist, and weekly show in the South Pacific/International. Our Film team was able to win first place for Best Directing while also receiving an Honorable Mention in Crazy Eights category.

Besides being out there in Seattle for the convention, the students were able to go sightseeing around the state, visiting places such as the Seattle Space Needle, Snoqualmie Valley, University of Washington, and the Seattle news station K5.
