April is the national month of the military child. It started in the mid 1980’s and became a way to acknowledge the sacrifices military children make. To celebrate this month we went out and asked military students what being in a military family means to them.

Lauren Ressetar: “To me being a military child means being able to take pride in what my parents do.” Ressetar says being a military child has taught her to be flexible in diverse situations which has ultimately helped her throughout life.

Despite all of the family you make around the world, you have to be ready to pick up and leave that behind when your family gets orders and I think the way military kids bounce back from that kind of defines who they are. As a military child I sacrifice literally any relationship with anyone after I move as distance tends to strain them.”

Marquise Blalock Jr: To Blalock being a military child means getting to travel to different places and meeting new people. He says “I’ve never been able to stay in one place and grow up with kids from elementary all the way until the end of highschool. However I’ve had nothing but good experiences and that’s a privilege”
